The reason for that is the narrow therapeutic window in radiotherapy. A dose deficit of only 10% can more than double the probability of tumor recurrence, whereas a similar excess dose can lead to degrade the quality of life by side effects.
12.
Requirement of Medical physicists
13.
There was a severe shortage of medical physicists in Sri Lanka for past many years.Government recruited a good number of physicists recently and at this moment the overall number of medical physicists is - 29 19 of them are recently appointed physics graduates and need training in the fields of radiotherapy and diagnostic radiology.
14.
Appointment of Medical Physicists in Radiotherapy Departments is a regulatory requirement.Appointment for the Medical Physicists in Radiotherapy as well as Diagnostic Radiology Departments has already started.Training Programs for Physicists are now essential for development of the Radiotherapy/ Diagnostic/ Nuclear Medicine facilities in the country.
15.
Role of Medical PhysicistsMedical physicists fulfill an essential role in modern medicine, most commonly in cancer treatment. Physicists typically start their specialization after graduating in a field of the natural sciences, usually physics. In addition to their original studies, they go through specialty training in medical sciences, as postgraduate programmes.
16.
Medical physicists make a major contribution to the safe and effective treatment of patients with cancer. Their knowledge of physics, particularly radiation physics and how it interacts with human tissue and of the complex technology involved in modern treatment of cancer are essential to the successful application of radiation therapy. The radiation oncology medical physicist's responsibilities cover five major areas: dosimetry, radiation safety, treatment planning, quality control, and equipment selection.

To be a qualified medical Physicist
23.
Hence the total time required for education and clinical training of a medical physicist is 4 - 5 years (2 years university education plus 2 - 3 years in-service clinical training) The objective of the clinical training programme is to produce Medical Physicists who can work unsupervised manner at a safe and highly professional standard.
24.
Medical Physics Clinical supervisorClinical supervisor is a suitably qualified and experienced medical physicist and clinically competent in radiation oncology medical physics.Normally, the number of residents in a department should not exceed the number of clinically competent medical physicists in that department.
